Role: I seeded the project along with the film’s director, Brian Wertheim. As Executive Producer, I helped manage all aspects of the film, including screenwriting and screenplay, assembly of creative team, and financial planning and fundraising.
Challenge: We sought to tell a story about Bam without casting him with stereotypical tropes about gang members. As well, by setting the documentary in Watts, L.A., we had to earn the trust of the neighborhood.
Solution: Mr. Somebody’s central character, Bam, speaks on the major issues of life — life and death, cultural identity, economic depression, and hope. As a lifelong PJ Watt Crip, Bam narrates his own story with an authoritative tone rugged authenticity.
